Fanning the Flame

Last week I gave you the refreshed Fan Dance pattern to celebrate its 1-year anniversary. I had fully intended on including this post in the celebration, but time doesn’t always allow one to complete the tasks they set before themselves (read: I waited until the last minute and then couldn’t get it all done.)

So we’ll just keep the party going a little longer. I present to you a 9 inch version of Fan Dance! For those of you that are into that sort of thing.

Fan Dance – 9 inch variant

Skill Level: Advanced beginner to Intermediate
Finished Size: 9 inches
Gauge: See Fan Dance pattern
Materials: Worsted weight yarn, crochet hook size I/5.5mm, yarn needle
Final Stitch Count: 29 sc per side

Abbreviations

ch – chain
dc – double crochet
hdc – half double crochet
r(#) – round number
sc – single crochet
sk – skip
slst – slip stitch
sp – space
st- stitch
tr – treble crochet
yo – yarn over

Special Stitches

bpsc/bphdc/bpdc – like normal sc, hdc, or dc, but instead of inserting hook at the top of indicated stitch, insert it from back to front around the post
of stitch

Standing sc – to start a round, with slip knot on hook, insert hook into indicated stitch, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through two loops on hook

Standing hdc – to start a round, with slip knot on hook, hold slip knot in place with thumb or finger, yo and hold that in place too, insert hook in indicated stitch, yo and pull up a loop, carefully yo and draw yarn through two loops on hook twice

Commence Pattern

Complete rounds 1 – 7 of Fan Dance Pattern.

Round 8: With new color standing sc in the first sc of any 3sc group. Sc in next 2 st. *^Sk next dc, bpsc in next dc, bphdc in next dc, bpdc in next dc, sk next dc and sc, into next sc work ([tr, ch1) 4 times, tr], sk next sc and next dc, bpdc in next dc, bphdc in next dc, bpsc in next dc, sk next dc, sc in next 3 sc, ch4, sk next 5dc,^ sc in next 3 sc.* Repeat from * to * twice and from ^ to ^ once more. Slst to first sc to join.
20 tr, 8 bpdc, 8 bphdc, 8 bpsc, 24 sc, 4 ch4 sp, 16 ch1 sp

Round 9: With same color ch2 (counts as first hdc), or with new color standing hdc in joining st. Hdc in next 2 sc. *^Dc in next 7 sts or ch1 sps, (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next tr (this will be the middle tr of the 5 tr group), dc in next 7 ch1 sps or sts, hdc in next 3 sc, sk the ch4 sp, working into the 5 dc from r7 that were skipped in r8: sk the first dc, bphdc in the next 3dc dc, sk the last dc,^ hdc in next 3 sc.^ Repeat from * to * twice and from ^ to ^ once more. Slst to first hdc to join.
72 dc, 24 hdc, 12 bphdc, 4 ch2 corners

Round 10: Ch1 and sc in same st, or with new color standing sc in joining st. [Sc in each st across to corner, (sc, ch2, sc) in corner ch2 sp] 4 times. Sc in each remaining st to first st. Slst to first sc to join. Fasten off.
116 sc, 4 ch2 corners

Weave in all ends and block if needed.
