Pattern Notes
- IMPORTANT: Each round starts by working a stitch into the same stitch you slip stitched to join in the previous round. But for the sake of repeats, sometimes the first st isn’t pointed out. Sometimes the pattern starts you off by saying to make a stitch into the next stitch. If you’re just starting a round and all you’ve done so far is the ch1 at the very beginning and the very first thing the pattern says to do is to stitch into the “next stitch,” that means the first stitch, the one with the slip stitch already in it. (I know, I know, this is a bit unconventional for me and my pattern writing, but hang in there. When you see how this and the other CAL patterns go you’ll understand why I took some liberties with the pattern writing.)
- Stitch counts will start with 1 stitch per side in round 1 and increase by 2 stitches every round. Not counting ch2 corners.
- When slip stitching to join, slip stitch to both loops and then pull the slip stitch tight.
- When you make a stitch into a lower round you will always leave the sc behind it unworked.
- After the first few rounds of this square you’ll likely find your rhythm and then cruise right along. However, until you find that rhythm I highly recommend using the stitch marker instructions. You can either place a stitch marker in every st as instructed, or, you can place them in the next ch1 sp that is to be worked and bump them up a round each time. You’ll see what I mean.
- This pattern is both a yarn eater and a gauge destroyer. Don’t make your fletching stitches too tight or your square will come out misshapen or too small, and don’t choose a yarn color that you need to be conservative with to be sure you don’t run out before you’re done.
- This pattern can be repeated to make a larger sized square. Just work through round 13 and then repeat rounds 8 through 13 with an extra set of fletching stitches on each repeat until you get about an inch an a half from the size you want. Make the last two rounds of fletching stitches as in rounds 14 and 15 and finish with round 16.

Solid-fletching st – {worked over 5 sts} dc into st or ch1 sp that is 2 rounds below and 2 sts ahead of next st pulling dc up to the height of your work, sc in BLO of next 3 st {if one of those sts is a ch sp work a regular sc into the ch sp}, dc into st or ch1 sp that is 2 rounds below and 2 sts behind next st pulling dc up to the height of your work
Commence Pattern
Begin with magic circle.
Round 1: Ch1. [Sc into magic circle, ch2] 4 times. Close magic circle. Slst to BOTH loops of first sc to join.
Note: place a stitch marker in each round 1 st – this will make it easier to find them in round 4.
Round 2: Ch2 {here and throughout counts as a ch1 to start your round to bring your yarn up to the height of your new stitches and a ch1 space}. Sk first st, (sc, ch2, sc) in next ch2 sp. [Ch1, sk next st, (sc, ch2, sc) in next ch2 sp] 3 times. Slst to beginning ch2 to join.
Note: place a stitch marker in each round 2 ch1 sp to be used in round 5. Continue to place st markers in the ch1 spaces throughout the pattern, you’ll use them to make the fletching stitches 3 rounds later.
Round 3: Ch2, sk ch2 sp that contains the join, sc in BLO of next st.
Work the following on each of the next 3 sides: *(sc, ch2, sc) in corner ch2 sp, sc in BLO of next st,* ch1, sk next ch1 sp, sc in BLO of next st.
To complete last side: repeat from * to * of previous section. Slst to beginning ch2 to join.
Hint: when you start to make dcs into lower rounds you’ll need to pull them up to the height of your work – the important thing here is not that you get them exactly the right length, but that you are consistent about how long you make them throughout the pattern
Round 4: Ch2, sk ch2 sp that contains the join, sc in BLO of next st, dc in st 2 rounds below and 2 sts behind next st pulling dc up to the height of your work {work all dcs throughout pattern by pulling them up to the height of your work}.
Work the following on each of the next 3 sides: (sc, ch2, sc) in corner ch2 sp, work fletching st over next 5 st.
To complete last side: (sc, ch2, sc) in corner ch2 sp, dc in st 2 rounds below and 2 sts ahead of next st, sc in BLO of next st. Slst to beginning ch2 to join.
Round 5: Ch2, sk ch2 sp that contains the join, sc in BLO of next st, dc in ch1 sp 2 rounds below and 2 sts behind next st, sc in BLO of next st.
