Pattern Notes
- IMPORTANT: Each round starts by working a stitch into the same stitch you slip stitched to join in the previous round. But for the sake of repeats, sometimes the first st isn’t pointed out. Sometimes the pattern starts you off by saying to make a stitch into the next stitch. If you’re just starting a round and all you’ve done so far is the ch1 at the very beginning and the very first thing the pattern says to do is to stitch into the “next stitch,” that means the first stitch, the one with the slip stitch already in it. (I know, I know, this is a bit unconventional for me and my pattern writing, but hang in there. When you see how this and the other CAL patterns go you’ll understand why I took some liberties with the pattern writing.)
- Stitch counts will start with 1 stitch per side in round 1 and increase by 2 stitches every round. Not counting ch2 corners.
- When slip stitching to join, slip stitch to both loops and then pull the slip stitch tight.
- When you make a stitch into a lower round you will always leave the sc behind it unworked.
- For the crochet along we’ll be making the pattern’s 16 rounds as written, but if you’d like to enlarge this pattern you’ll get the idea by round 15, then you can just repeat rounds 8 through 15 with a few more triangles each time.

Special Stitches
Note: You don’t have to use the triangle stitches – they are a bit complicated, so I’ve provided an alternative stitch. I encourage you to try the triangles a few times though, once you get the idea they flow fairly easily.
Triangle st: {see the instructions for a tr5tog for an alternative to the triangle st}
Place first leg of st into the FLO of the st that is 3 rounds below and 2 sts behind the next st of your current round, place the next four legs into the FLO of the next 4 sts of the same round as the first leg was placed
- Yo twice and insert hook into FLO of first st {as described above}, yo and pull up a loop, [yo and pull through 2 loops on hook] twice {2 loops on hook}
- Yo once and insert hook into FLO of next st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops on hook {3 loops on hook}
- Repeat step 2 {4 loops on hook}.
- Repeat step 2 {5 loops on hook}. Yo and pull through 3 loops on hook {3 loops on hook}
- Yo twice and insert hook into FLO of next st, yo and pull up a loop {6 loops on hook}, [yo and pull through 2 loops on hook] twice {4 loops on hook}
- To finish stitch: yo and pull through 3 loops on hook {2 loops on hook}, yo and pull through last 2 loops on hook
Tr5tog – {see triangle st instructions for placement} ^yo twice, insert hook into indicated st and pull up a loop [yo and pull through 2 loops on hook] twice,^ repeat from ^ to ^ 5 times {6 loops on hook}, yo and pull through 5 loops on hook, yo and pull through last 2 loops on hook
