I’m so pleased to present my contribution for week 17 of the Friends Around the World Crochet Along, brought to you by the amazing people of the “CAL – Crochet A Long” Facebook group. If you’re already a member there then you know what a great group of crocheters they are. If you’re not yet a member, I recommend getting on that. It’s a great group of people with exceptional admins. They’ve put a ton of work into organizing this Anniversary CAL and I can’t thank them enough.
Now, without further ado…

Designer’s Notes
The pattern below includes round by round photo tutorials and quick-glance instructions. The quick-glance instructions are designed to complement the pattern for beginners, providing a visual guide for stitch placement. However, the more advanced crocheter may find that they can use the photo tutorials to skip the pattern instructions completely, at least in some areas. They don’t contain instructions on starting or finishing the round, so you can check out the pattern if you need to know that stuff or other details. Click on any of the photo tutorial diagrams to enlarge them, which is especially useful for the later rounds that contain smaller text.
Each round begins as through you are continuing with the same yarn from the last round. If you are changing colors, optional instructions for that are contained in [brackets].
In rounds 3 through 9 you’ll be working almost entirely into chain spaces and the spaces between shells so I’m not going to list every skipped stitch.
Translations
I think this is the coolest part of the whole shebang. The pattern has been translated into NINE additional languages! PDFs can be downloaded by clicking the links below.

Commence Pattern
Begin with a magic circle/double magic circle. (See my tutorial for double magic circles, including a video, here!)
Round 1: Ch3 (counts as first dc here and throughout). 11dc into magic circle. Close magic circle and slst to first dc to join. Do not fasten off.
12 dc
Round 2: Ch1 and sc in same st as join. Ch1. [Sc in next dc, ch1] 11 times. Slst to first sc to join.
12 sc, 12 ch1 sp
Round 3: Slst into next ch1 sp, ch4 and dc in same ch1 sp (counts as first V) [Color change option: standing V in any ch1 sp]. [V in next ch1 sp] 11 times. Slst to first dc to join.
12 V stitches
Time to check your gauge! At this point your circle should measure about 3.25 inches if you are using the suggested worsted weight yarn and 5.5mm hook. Measure your circle, and if it’s close to 3.25 inches your final product should be very close to or exactly 12 inches. If not, you may want to adjust your hook size accordingly and start over. Remember, it’s okay to be a little bit smaller. You can always add to the final product if it’s a little small.
Round 4: Slst into ch1 sp of first V, ch5 and dc in same ch1 sp (counts as first wide V) [Color change option: standing Wide V in ch1 sp of any V]. [Wide V in ch1 sp of next V] 11 times. Slst to first dc to join.
12 wide V stitches
Round 5: Slst in ch2 sp of first wide V, work beg sm shell [Color change option: standing sm shell in ch2 sp of any wide V]. [Sm shell in ch2 sp of next wide V] 11 times. Slst to first dc to join.
12 sm shells
Round 6: Slst into next dc, slst into next ch2 sp of first sm shell, work beg shell [Color change option: standing shell in ch2 sp of any sm shell]. [Shell in ch2 sp of next sm shell] 11 times. Slst to first dc to join.
12 shells
Round 7: Slst into next 2 dc, slst into next ch2 sp of first shell, work beg shell [Color change option: standing shell in ch2 sp of any shell]. Dc in sp between 2 shells. [Shell in ch2 sp of next shell, dc in sp between 2 shells] 11 times. Slst to first dc to join.
12 shells, 12 dc
Round 8: Slst into next 2 dc, slst into next ch2 sp of first shell, work beg shell [Color change option: standing shell in ch2 sp of any shell]. V in next dc made in sp between 2 shells. [Shell in ch2 sp of next shell, V in next dc made in sp between 2 shells] 11 times. Slst to first dc to join.

144 stitches around including ch1 spaces / 24 tr, 36 dc, 12 sc, 72 ch1 sp
Note: In round 10 and round 11 I will be very specific about which stitches and ch spaces to skip, so read the pattern carefully and reference the photo diagrams if needed.

Thanks so much Sharon! Admittedly, this pattern lends itself to this style of presentation rather well. Not all of them do. Fan Dance does, though!

Love the design. I see all the rainbow colors in it. Red, orange, yellow, two greens, two blues and purple. What could be more beautiful than a rainbow! I need squares approx. 20″. I think I can add more rows at the end.

To AFWifeCrochetNut, I love that you made this pattern in one color. I plan to make it in a single color also. Happy to see that it works well. I see it can easily be enlarged.
