Happy day before Labor Day weekend to the readers in the US! Happy regular Friday to everyone else! I’ll keep this short and sweet so we can all get on with our weekend crocheting. (And if you’re into sales, scroll to the end for sale info for this weekend only.)
I have a little something for you to get your weekend going. A new free pattern! This is Mimic, a shawl/wrap and a nice and easy make.

I’ve used simple alternating sections of moss stitch and V stitch for a sleek modern look. It makes for a very easy to wear accessory, and hopefully one that will please gift recipients. That big end of year thing we try not to mention too early is coming faster than any of us would like to admit, and I know you’re all starting your gift lists even if just by making mental notes.
I had a little trouble selecting yarn for this project. I didn’t have quite enough of the yarn I wanted to use, so I went stash shopping. I’m so glad I did because it worked out beautifully! First I found two cakes of Stylecraft Batik Swirl in Blue Ocean that have been patiently waiting on the shelf for me to commit a pattern to them. This yarn makes for such a luscious and snuggly wrap and the added wool fiber content is extra warm. It’s still so hot in my part of the world, it’s hard to imagine I’ll ever be cold again, but it is coming. It is. I hope.

Then I had another crazy idea. What if I made another shawl in a completely different yarn weight? I dug out a cake of Scheepjes Whirl in Strawberries & Scream, did some calculations, and decided I could make it work. Again, it worked beautifully! The Whirl made for a perfect-for-right-now, light and airy shawl that will ease my shoulders from summer into autumn.

The two different yarn weights required some different planning. So, in the pattern you’ll find instructions on how to make both versions. You’ll also find instructions on how to adjust the pattern to your liking. It’s VERY easy! If you want a completely different size (and you think you have enough yarn) you can make whatever kind of shawl you want. Have fun with it!
Finally, I thought, “heck, it’s a holiday weekend! Let’s have sale!” So through Monday, September 3, midnight PDT, everything in my Ravlery and Etsy stores in 30% off, no coupon code needed. So, if shawls aren’t really your thing, have a peek and maybe try out a blanket or afghan square this weekend. Whatever you decide, have some yarny fun.
Have a great weekend and enjoy some crochet time! If you decide to give the Mimic shawl a go, pop into the Polly Plum Pattern Posse on Facebook and let us know how it went.

Hi Polly. I will be spending the Canadian Labor Day weekend crocheting Blizzard Warning squares for a bed cover for my daughter-in-law. Having a great time now that I have more or less memorized the pattern. My biggest problem is getting over confident and making a silly mistake. Have a great weekend.

Hello Polly😊
I am starting the Mimic shawl. When the pattern says “turn”, do I turn the corner or turn to the opposite side?
Polly says
Hi Jo! When the pattern says “turn” it means to the other side.
