I am so happy to finally be announcing the Wild Wild Wallflower mandala crochet along! If you’re in my Facebook group, the Polly Plum Pattern Posse (which you should definitely join, it’s a really fun and supportive group), you already know I’ve been teasing about this mandala for months. Months!!
I designed this before Littler Miss Plum’s arrival back in March (yes, baby #2 is here). And, as most of you will know, having a baby kind of gets in the way of everything else. So, here we are, months later, and I’m finally getting around to publishing this. Yay! And to make it even more fun we’re going to do a quick little crochet along. Double yay!!
Here’s what you need to know:
MOST IMPORTANT!
SERIOUSLY. READ THIS PART.
The pattern is totally FREE and will be available in three installments here on my blog and video tutorials will be free on YouTube.
OR, buy the premium PDF version of the pattern and get a beautifully designed, printable, ad free pattern to add to your pattern binder all while supporting a small business.
FAQ
Why should I buy the PDF?
Lots of reasons!
- It’s printable.
- It’s ad free.
- It’s really pretty. If you’ve ever bought one of my patterns before you know I put a lot of work into making it as enjoyable to read and look at the pattern as it is to make the pattern. That’s my goal anyway.
- There’s photo tutorials for the tricky parts.
- It includes a color planning placement sheet with color placement tips. If you haven’t seen these before it’s like a coloring page you use to plan your colors. You can color it in or just use it to help you visualize your color placement.
- It comes in both US and UK terminology.
- It includes links to the videos for easy reference.
- You’ll receive an email each time the pattern is updated with the next part of the CAL.
- At the end of the CAL the different PDFs will be combined into one file, so you don’t have to click through the different parts when you use the pattern again.
- You get to directly support a small business and a family. Really! Isn’t it nice to know where your money is going? When you support family businesses you know you’re helping them pay rent or electricity bills or just buy more diapers. (I promise the only space ships being built around here are made of cardboard and fueled by imagination.)
- Did I mention it’s pretty?
Click the button below to buy the pattern PDF now for the presale price of just $3 (valid through September 6, 2021).
What if I don’t want to buy anything?
Great! You don’t have to! You can still make the whole mandala from the free version of the pattern on my blog or in the video tutorials. It’s the exact same pattern.
What if I don’t want to buy anything but still show some support?
That’s so sweet of you! And very much appreciated. Please share this CAL with your friends who crochet. Share pictures of what you make in Facebook groups and on Instagram. Browse through my blog. Look at my other patterns (lots more are free!).
Where can I buy the PDF?
For the duration of the CAL it will be available on Ravelry. Upon release of the final part of the CAL (September 5th) I will add the pattern to Etsy. Sorry, Etsy doesn’t allow me to add PDFs in installments, so it doesn’t work for CALs. Fortunately, it’s a very short CAL so it will be available on Etsy before you know it.
When can I buy the PDF?
Right now! It’s already available for purchase on Ravelry, and you’ll be able to download the first PDF installment for planning your mandala immediately.
It will be available on Etsy, in its entirety, on September 5th.
Get the pre-CAL price on both Ravelry and Etsy through midnight PDT, September 6, 2021.
How will I know when the next part of the CAL has been released?
Those who purchase the premium version of the pattern will receive email updates when the next part is available.
Those following along on my blog will have to check in on release days. You can either subscribe to my blog (above), follow Every Trick on the Hook on Facebook, join the Polly Plum Pattern Posse on Facebook, or follow @polly_plum_crochet on Instagram.
Alright, now that all of that is out of the way…
Here’s what you really want to know about the crochet along.
Pattern Details
Terminology: The web and video versions of the pattern are in US terms. The premium PDF is in both US and UK terms.
Skill level: intermediate
Finished size: 12” diameter
Schedule
Each part will be released at approximately 10am Mountain time.
Intro document – Available now in the PDF presale/this blog post/video above
Part 1 – Wednesday, September 1
Part 2 – Friday, September 3
Part 3 – Sunday, September 5
Materials
Yarn – DK weight yarn scraps in any colors you like. Aran could work too but you’ll need a larger hoop (15 or 16”) and a larger hook (4.5mm)
I used Stylecraft Special DK scraps.
Hoop – One 12” floral hoop. I used bamboo but metal works too. Embroidery hoops can work too and are usually very affordable and easy to find.
I bought two types of hoops from Amazon.
These ones were my favorite. They’re just a bit more sturdy and the bamboo is very smooth and looks great, but they only come in variety packs from this brand. If you love to make mandalas, this might be a good option for you. It’s a great deal for how many hoops you get!
These work perfectly well too, the bamboo was just ever so slightly thinner than the ones above, and you can buy a two pack.
Hook – 3.5mm, but if you know you have tight tension you may want a 4mm.
My favorite hooks are Tulip Etimo. They have been the best for my very overused crochet hand. If you found other ergonomic hooks to be too bulky for your hand like I did, I recommend giving these a shot.
Scissors and yarn needle – for color changes and end weaving.
Guitar shaped scissors are totally unnecessary but, they are lots of fun.
Ruler – to check your gauge
Alright, I think that about covers it. If you have any questions the best place to ask them is in the Polly Plum Pattern Posse Facebook group where the admins and pattern testers will have quick and reliable information for you.
See you on release day!
