Special Stitches
Standing sc – to start a round, with slip knot on hook, insert hook into indicated stitch, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through two loops on hook
Standing hdc – to start a round, with slip knot on hook, hold slip knot in place with thumb or finger, yo and hold that in place too, insert hook in indicated stitch, yo and pull up a loop, carefully yo and draw yarn through all three loops on hook {alternately: slst into the indicated starting st and ch2}
Standing dc – to start a round, with slip knot on hook, hold slip knot in place with thumb or finger, yo and hold that in place too, insert hook in indicated stitch, yo and pull up a loop, carefully yo and draw yarn through two loops on hook twice {alternately: slst into the indicated starting st and ch3}
fptr – yo twice, insert hook from front to back around post of indicated st, yo and pull up a loop, [yo and pull through 2 loops on hook] 4 times
fpdtr – yo 3 times, insert hook from front to back around post of indicated st, yo and pull up a loop, [yo and pull through 2 loops on hook] 4 times
V stitch – dc, ch1, dc
Standing V – standing dc, ch1, dc
2dc-cl – {two double crochet cluster} [yo and insert hook into indicated sp, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops on hook] twice, yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook
3dc-cl – {three double crochet cluster} [yo and insert hook into indicated sp, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops on hook] 3 times, yo and pull through all 4 loops on hook
Pattern
Begin with magic circle.
Round 1: Ch4 {counts as dc, ch1}. [Dc into mc, ch1] 7 times. Close mc. Slst to 3rd ch of starting ch to join.
8dc, 8ch1 sp (16 st around)
Round 2: Slst into next ch1 sp and ch3. {Or, with new yarn: standing dc in any ch1 sp.} 2dc into same ch1 sp as first dc. [Sk next dc, 3dc into next ch1 sp] 7 times. Slst to first dc to join.
24 dc
Round 3: Do not sk any st behind fptr. Ch1 and sc in same st as join. {Or, with new yarn: standing sc in first dc of any 3dc group.} Sc in next 2 st. *^Fptr around the r1 dc that came just before the 3dc group that was just worked into,^ sc in next 3 dc.* Repeat from * to * 6 times and from ^ to ^ once more. Slst to first sc to join.
8 fptr, 24 sc (32 st around)

Round 4: Do not sk any st behind fpdtr. Ch1 and sc in same st as join. {Or, with new yarn: standing sc in first sc after any fptr.} Sc in next sc. *^Fpdtr around the same r1 dc as the previous r3 fptr,^ sc in next 4 st.* Repeat from * to * 6 times and from ^ to ^ once more. Sc in last 2 st. Slst to first sc to join.
8 fpdtr, 32 sc (40 st around)

Round 5: Ch1 and sc in same st as join. {Or, with new yarn: standing sc in any st.} Sc in each st around. Slst to first sc to join.
40 sc
Round 6: Ch4 and dc in same st as join. {Or, with new yarn: standing V in any st.} Sk next st. [V in next st, sk next st] 19 times. Slst to first dc of first V to join.
20 V st (60 st around)
Round 7: Slst into ch1 sp of first V, ch1 and sc in same ch1 sp. {Or, with new yarn: standing sc in ch1 sp of any V.} *^5fptr around first dc of next V,^ sc in ch1 sp of same V, sk second dc of that V.* Repeat from * to * 18 times and from ^ top ^ once more. Slst to first sc to join. Fasten off.
100 fptr, 20 sc (120 st around)
Hint: If you want a slightly less dramatic “crust” on your pie, you can make fpdc instead of fptr.

Round 8: Sk all r7 stitches, work only into r6 ch1 sps. Standing sc in the ch1 sp of any V keeping sc before the r7 sc made into the same ch1 sp. Ch2. [Sc in ch1 sp of next r6 V keeping sc before the r7 sc made into the same ch1 sp, ch2] 19 times. Slst to first sc to join.
20 sc, 20 ch2 sp (60 st around)

Round 9: Sk all sc, work only into ch2 sps. Slst into next ch2 sp, ch1 and sc in same sp. {Or, with new yarn: standing sc in any ch2 sp.} 2sc into same ch2 sp as first sc. *^Sc in next ch2 sp, ch1, [2dc-cl, ch1] 5 times in next ch2 sp, sc in next ch2 sp,^ [3sc in next ch2 sp] twice.* Repeat from * to * 2 times and from ^ to ^ once more. 3sc in last ch2 sp. Slst to first sc to join.
20 2dc-cl, 32 sc, 24 ch1 sp (76 st around)
Round 10: Ch1 and sc in same st as join. {Or, with new yarn: standing sc in 5th sc of any 8sc group.} Sc in next sc. *^Ch2, sk next 2 sc, 3dc-cl in next ch1 sp, ch2, [sk next 2dc-cl, 3dc-cl in next ch1 sp, ch2] 5 times, sk next 2 sc,^ sc in next 4 sc.* Repeat from * to * 2 times and from ^ to ^ once more. Sc in last 2 sc. Slst to first sc to join.
24 3dc-cl, 16 sc, 28 ch2 sp (96 st around)
Round 11: Ch2. {Or, with new yarn: standing hdc in 3rd sc of any 4 sc group.} Hdc in next st. *^3 hdc in next ch2 sp, sk next 3dc-cl, [3sc in next ch2 sp, sk next 3dc-cl] twice, (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next ch2 sp {ch2 counts as corner}, sk next 3dc-cl, [3sc in next ch2 sp, sk next 3dc-cl] twice, 3hdc in next ch2 sp,^ hdc in next 4 sc.* Repeat from * to * 2 times and from ^ to ^ once more. Hdc in next 2 sc. Slst to first hdc to join.
16 dc, 40 hdc, 48 sc, 4 ch2 sp (26 st per side)
Round 12: Ch1 and sc in same st as join. {Or, with new yarn: standing sc in any st.} *Sc in each st across to corner, (sc, ch2, sc) in corner ch2 sp.* Repeat from * to * three times. Sc in each st to first st. Slst to first sc to join.
112 sc, 4 ch2 sp (28 st per side)
Hint: If you’re looking to make the 9 inch version, stop here and measure your square. Add round 13 if you need a little more size.
Round 13: Standing sc in any corner ch2 sp, ch2, sc again in same sp. *^Sk first st of side, sc in each st across to next corner,^ (sc, ch2, sc) in corner ch2 sp.* Repeat from * to * twice and from ^ to ^ once more. Slst to first sc to join.
116 sc, 4 ch2 sp (29 st per side)
Round 14: Slst into next ch2 sp, ch1, and sc in same sp. {Or, with new yarn: standing sc in any corner ch2 sp.} Ch2, sc again in same ch2 sp. *^Sk next 2 st, [(2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next st, sk next 2 st, sc in next st, sk next 2 st] 5 times,^ (sc, ch2, sc) in corner ch2 sp.* Repeat from * to * twice and from ^ to ^ once more. Slst to first sc to join.
80 dc, 24 sc, 24 ch2 sp (36 st per side)
Round 15: Ch4 and dc in same st as join {counts as first V stitch}. {Or, with new yarn: Standing V in any sc that comes immediately before a corner ch2 sp.} *(Dc, ch2, dc) in next corner ch2 sp, V in next sc, [ch1, sk next 2 st, sc in next ch2 sp, ch1, sk next 2 st, V in next sc] 5 times.* Repeat from * to * 3 times, omitting final V st on last repeat. Slst to first dc to join.
24 V stitches, 8 dc, 4 ch2 sp, 40 ch1 sp (35 st per side)
Round 16: Ch1, and sc in same st as join. {Or, with new yarn: standing sc in any st or ch1 sp.} *Sc in each st and ch1 sp across to next corner ch2 sp, (sc, ch2, sc) in corner ch2 sp.* Repeat from * to * 3 times. Sc in each st and ch1 sp across to first st. Slst to first st to join.
148 sc, 4 ch2 sp (37 st per side)
Round 17: Ch1 and sc in same st as join. {Or, with new yarn: standing sc in any st.} *Sc in each st across to corner, (sc, ch2, sc) in corner ch2 sp.* Repeat from * to * three times. Sc in each st to first st. Slst to first sc to join. Fasten off.
156 sc, 4 ch2 sp (39 st per side)
Weave in all ends and block.
