Main Motif Pattern
Make 4 total of the Main Motif pattern.
Begin with magic circle. {Click here to see a photo or video tutorial on using a double magic circle which is more secure than a traditional magic circle. Watch the video tutorial for tip on how to not use the magic circle at all but still get that magic circle look.}

Slst to first sc to join. Fasten off.
16 tr, 24 dc, 24 sc, 4 ch2 sp (16 st per side, not counting ch2 corners)
Note: at this point your motif should measure approximately 5.25 inches.
Note: If you’re making a 6 inch square rather than the CAL square scroll to the bottom of this pattern for instructions.
Finishing
To join motifs:
- With color D. Holding two of the motifs back to back, sc into the corner ch2 sp of both motifs together, working along the sides of both motifs together sc into both of the two corresponding sts from each motif across to the next corner, sc into the corner ch2 sp of both motifs together.
- Ch1 {does not count as a st}.
- Take the next two motifs and place them back to back. Using same yarn as is connected to the first two motifs, continue connecting the next two motifs following the same instructions in step 1.
- Fasten off yarn.
- Fold the 4 motifs in half in the opposite direction so that the unconnected motifs are now back to back. Repeat step 1, 2, and then 1 again to connect the motifs along this side. The middle ch1 will land immediately on top of the other middle ch1.
{Hint: this is a classic type of joining method that can be used for big or small joining projects. Click here to see a video tutorial of this join in action.}
