Lotus Moon CAL – Week 1

Lotus Moon Tiles

Today begins week 1 of the Lotus Moon Tiles Crochet-Along. I hope you’re ready and excited!

Over at the CAL Facebook group I’ve posted a chatty little video where you can meet me and listen to me talk about the pattern and the stuff you’re going to need to know for this week. I’m going to post one of these videos each week, but you have to join the CAL group to see them.

As I promised in the video, I would outline everything I talked about for those of you who can’t or don’t want to listen to the videos. So here we go:

  • Each week I’ll post a video and a blog to talk about that week’s part of the CAL. I’ll discuss techniques that will be used that week and offer any advice, tips, or tricks for making things easier or prettier.
  • Check the pinned post at the top of the Facebook group page. This is where I’ll post the videos. The comments are turned off on this post so that I can use it as a place to collect resources. I will also post the applicable tutorials/videos that you’ll need that week.
  • We’re using the Lotus Moon Tiles pattern (NOT the square pattern, they are different)
  • You can use as many motifs as you want to make your afghan. The pattern makes a 3 octagon by 4 octagon afghan. You can add or subtract rows of octagons to get the size you want. The pattern contain instructions on how to do so.
  • Supplies: you’ll need a 5.5mm hook to start. Later we’ll make the smaller motifs with a 5.0mm hook. Those hook sizes are for worsted weight yarn. If you’re using DK you’ll want a 4.5mm and a 4.0mm. You’ll also want stitch markers for later. Lots of them. Them make joining easier.

This weeks assignment:

Make rounds 1 through 3 of your octagons.

The exception to this would be if you plan on using the same color in rounds 3 and 4. You don’t want to cut your yarn if you don’t have to, so just leave round 3 off in that case and do it next week.

There are 3 advanced techniques we’ll look at this week. All of them are optional but will help make things easier and give you a neater more polished finished project.

That’s it for this week. Please post pictures of your work and any questions in the group. I’ll see you there!
